Dear coffee lovers, first of all, merry Christmas! We hope you had a chance to spend some time with family this holiday season. This year’s been pretty rough and it doesn’t help that big family gatherings are not allowed. Things are looking up though! Let’s hope the new year has the success of the vaccines in store for us, and as always, good coffee!

Coffee beans don’t just grow on trees. Well, they do, but first they need to be removed from the cherries they grow in and dried. It sounds pretty straightforward but there are actually many methods to do this. On top of that, there is even variation inside of each method. Chris Kornman, writing for DCN, has put all of the current processing types in a useful table.

According to this article there aren’t many studies and a link has not been proven. Although dietitians recommend listening to what your body tells you, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. But if drinking coffee first thing in the morning is your thing, there’s no reason to stop.
“Freezus Saves: Toby’s Estate Launches Whole-Bean Coffee Line for Freezing” by Daily Coffee News
Australian specialty coffee company Toby’s Estate has launched their new product called Freezus. The idea is conserving the peak flavour of their best coffees for a longer period. It’s a new idea in the coffee industry. One that we will be following to see how it unfolds.
The next round of upgrades to the website have to do with the user experience and first time visitors. After receiving feedback it was clear that the landing page was not very engaging. This added up with the data. Most of the visitors to our site do not go through the coffee quiz. But seeing as it is our main service we needed to do something to make it more enticing and clear what the service entails. So we decided to scrap the name ‘coffee quiz’. It may not have been an attractive idea at best and at worst it could have totally put someone off or made them think that it will not help them get what they want.
We replaced that button with multiple buttons, each belonging to a brewing method. To illustrate this are the corresponding icons from the quiz. This way the user immediately knows that they are choosing a preference instead of going through a quiz. The function is the same but the way it is presented to the first time user is what we hope will make the difference.
Another update are the colours on the website. We are rolling out the extended colour palette across the website as an update to our brand identity. Other examples being the blog and the team section in the ‘About Us‘ page. You may have also noticed these colours if you are part of our Facebook group.
Coffee Recipe of the Month
Holiday Season Spice Latte
For the holiday season we have a special festive brew for you. This drink will give you that special Christmas feeling and will keep you warm on a cold day. The recipe yields 2 cups of coffee. Here’s how to make it:
What you’ll need
- A coffee press
- 500 ml water
- 30 gr ground coffee
- 1 tbsp. brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp. ground cloves
- 1/8 tsp. ground cardamom
- Whipped cream, for serving
- Sprinkles, for serving
- Mix the coffee, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom in the press
- Heat up the water to about 94°C, just before it starts boiling
- Pour just enough water to cover all of the mixture and mix thoroughly
- Leave the brew to rest for 30 seconds
- Pour the rest of the water and push the plunger in halfway down and then lift it back up to just below the water level
- Wait for 4 minutes then serve your coffee in mugs with whipped cream and sprinkles
