“USDA Identifies Taiwan as Major US Coffee Export Market” by Daily Coffee News.
In this article, the Daily Coffee News reflects a nice way of seeing how a coffee marketplace like Taiwan in this example can be a growing, nurturing, and strategic point for coffee exports from the United States.
In our opinion, this is a really logical and expanding idea, especially for the long-term situation since the report that was released at the beginning of this month outlines the exponential growth and the sustained potential of the entire Taiwanese coffee market, particularly in the higher-end roasted specialty coffee segment, and for the Hawaiian-grown coffee.
A really important and interesting fact that we learn in this article is that Taiwan is currently the eighth largest market for food and agricultural exports from the U.S., despite occupying an island approximately the size of Connecticut.
One of the most recent surveys that the International Coffee Organization made suggests Taiwan’s residents which in number were 23 million, drank about 2.85 billion cups of coffee last year.
The report also suggests that more diverse coffee offerings in the marketplace have created a thirst for differentiated, higher-end coffees. When we go deeper into the exploration of these news, the coffee marketplaces around the world reflect a similar interest. An interest in differentiation and specialty coffee, of course.
According to the FAS (United States Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service) report, Taiwan demands a strong interest in Hawaiian-grown unroasted and roasted coffee. This also wakes up interest in us, as ColdHotDrinks, to consider the exploration of some new Hawaiian coffee beans. These news are really fulfilling for everyone’s coffee knowledge, so a special thanks goes to Daily Coffee News for this informative article.
As we continue with our reading, we learn more directly about the official FAS report’s communication.
“Taiwan importers and coffee shop owners have expressed a high level of interest in purchasing quality U.S. coffee beans, especially Kona coffee beans from Hawaii,” the report states. “In addition, American roasted coffees have gradually gained popularity recently and Taiwan importers always eager to introduce more varieties of coffees from Hawaii.”

“Grinding For Espresso At Home” by Perfect Daily Grind.
Extracting espresso coffee can be a quite tricky and difficult task to fulfill. This article by Perfect Daily Grind answers a lot of questions of “whys” and “hows” of making great espresso coffee at home.
They state that the NCA’s 2021 National Coffee Data Trends report found that nearly a third of US coffee drinkers have attempted to replicate a café-style beverage at home in the last 12 months. To this end, more than 20% purchased new home coffee machines.
This means we come to the conclusion that having a proper, good-quality coffee grinder is crucial. Perfect Daily Grind’s team that wrote this article states: “A high-quality espresso machine paired with a lower-quality, inconsistent grinder that can’t achieve the right grind size will be unable to produce quality espresso.”. Having a good grinder is the main starting point to create decent espresso coffee at home.
One of the parts that struck us the most was how when you grind your coffee finer and finer, you increase the surface area of your ground coffee which means that you can extract from each coffee particle in a shorter period of time. The optimal brewing time for an espresso shot is somewhere between 20-30 seconds. This means that finding the right grinding size is key.
Marzia Viotti who’s a technical trainer at Fiorenzato and Ollie Sears who’s the wholesale manager at North Star Coffee Roasters in Leeds answer the following questions:
Why is consistency so important for espresso?
What are some tips for dialing in espresso at home?
What are some of the highest-quality burrs of the home coffee grinders?
All of the answers are answered in an expanded elaboration within the article.
Coffee recipe of the month
Homemade Kahlua Liqueur
Homemade Kahlua Liqueur has a piece of history behind its making. The Coffee Bean team explains it perfectly.
“The original recipe for Tia Maria coffee liqueur dates back to the 17th century, though it wasn’t commercialized until the 1950s. Kahlua has been manufactured since 1936, and the world’s first Irish Coffee was served in 1943. While we don’t recommend a coffee liqueur on the rocks during your morning commute, there’s certainly a time and place for the timeless combination of two of our favorite beverages: coffee and alcohol.”
What You Will Need:
- 4 cups of water
- 3 cups of vodka
- 2 cups of white sugar
- 2 cups of brown sugar
- 1/2 cup of coffee grounds
- 1 vanilla bean
This is the specific explanation of Coffee Bean on how to make this recipe:
“First, pour both sugars into a large bowl and stir until mixed. Bring 4 cups of water to boil in a large saucepan and pour in the sugar. Stir the water until the sugar is completely dissolved.
After you’ve added the coffee, remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool.
Cut open your vanilla bean and scoop the creamy insides into your mixture. Add the vodka and stir it in gently. Once all ingredients have been combined, pour your homemade Kahlua into airtight containers and let them sit in a cool, dark spot for two weeks for optimal flavor.”
